La Mama Courthouse, Carlton
La Mama is an independent theatre founded in Carlton in 1967 by Betty Burstall to nurture new Australian theatre, modelled on the off-off-Broadway coffee-house theatre scene she encountered in New York. La Mama Courthouse, in the former Carlton Courthouse on Drummond Street, has been one of its performance venues since the mid-1990s, hosting theatre, poetry, music and cabaret.
